Each resort has a code of conduct for use of the slopes, this will be displayed in various places on the resort. Generally they all say roughly the same thing although it is worth reading as there may be some variations, failure to follow these may result in passes being revoked. In Switzerland for example they have been talking about introducing speed limits, although I suspect this will be difficult to enforce. It could be worth a visit though if you want to know how fast you ride.

So in general the code of conduct states that anyone further down the slope from you has right of way. You must ride responsibly and not flee from the scene of an accident. Most resorts tend to be quite friendly with both skiers and boarders being respectful of each other. Children on the other hand can be lethal. They tend to be oblivious of others a lot of the time and bomb it about at top speed, watch out for them at all times.

Here is an example of an official code of conduct:

  • Always stay in control. You must be able to stop or avoid other people or objects.

  • People ahead of you have the right-of-way. It is your responsibility to avoid them.

  • Do not stop where you obstruct a trail or are not visible from above.

  • Before starting downhill or merging onto a trail, look uphill and yield to others.

  • If you are involved in or witness a collision or accident, you must remain at the scene and identify yourself to the Ski Patrol.

  • Always use proper devices to help prevent runaway equipment.

  • Observe and obey all posted signs and warnings.

  • Keep off closed trails and closed areas.

  • You must not use lifts or terrain if your ability is impaired through use of alcohol or drugs.

  • You must have sufficient physical dexterity, ability and knowledge to safely load, ride and unload lifts. If in doubt, ask the lift attendant.

Here`s what they meant to say:

  • Don`t fight trees they always win, and crashing can hurt.

  • Don`t crash into people or make them stack.

  • Don`t sit in a stupid place where you can`t be seen (like the landing area of a kicker)

  • Look where your going and don`t cut people up.

  • Don`t run from ski patrol their skidoos can go faster than you.

  • Don`t let your board slide down the hill it will go all the way to the bottom taking people out on the way. Then you’ll have to walk past the carnage to get it, everyone will know it was you!

  • Don’t ride in areas marked as dangerous Avalanche teams may be working there.

  • Drugs and alcohol are frowned upon. Don’t get caught!

  • Don`t fall off lifts or stand at the top of them in the way of others (especially if you are a skier)

And what they forgot:

  • Don`t hog kickers and rails they are there for everyone. If you build one leave it for others when you`ve finished.

  • Don’t shout abuse at people who can’t ride when they’re on the beginner runs.

  • Check that people lying on the floor not moving are OK and not dying or in need of ski patrol.
